The artist is playing what I think is called the Thoppi Maddalam, one of the instruments that form part of the Panchavadyam used in temples, marriage ceremonies and festival celebrations.
If anyone knows better, do let me know or share more information in the comments.

It is alos probably called Thavil in Tamil. And it is a part of Panchvadyam.
